Myth
It will help you here to keep in mind that the development team is accountable for the sprint backlog and they own it, having said that sprint goal is part of the sprint backlog and that means the development team should also own it and be responsible for doing their best to achieve it, so would you accept to own and achieve a goal that you didn’t create or choose yourself?
Of course the development team can discuss/negotiate/consult the product owner while crafting the sprint goal during the sprint planning but that doesn’t mean asking the PO to choose or set the goal.
A powerful scrum value helps us here understand also why it’s important to held the development team responsible for crafting the sprint goal, it’s the commitment value where the team will commit to do their best into turning the sprint backlog to a potentially releasable increment and achieving the sprint goal.
Hello Rasheed. In your explanation you tell that the product owner doesn’t craft the sprint goal. But when you read the guide he does craft the sprint goal, but he does it as part of the scrum team.
In the guide under the Sprint planning it is clearly stated that:
“During Sprint Planning the Scrum Team also crafts a Sprint Goal”.
Dear Thijs,
Thanks for your comment, indeed the guide mentioned that the scrum team craft the sprint goal and since the card is specifically mentioned that PO crafts the goal which is a clear myth.
Regarding why I mentioned the development team because it’s also in the guide under Sprint goal section that the sprint goal is what the development team use to have some guidance, flexibility, validation of their progress and working together, so it makes sense that the development team try to craft the goal by consulting the product owner and scrum master which I mentioned in my explanation which means that the entire scrum team is involved.
Thanks again
You reason like I do! Wow!
